Preventing and relieving gastritis

What is gastritis?

Gastritis is a condition caused by inflammation, irritation or erosion of lining of the stomach. It is divided into two major types – acute and chronic. Acute gastritis occurs suddenly and it can generally be treated, whereas chronic gastritis occurs gradually and it is usually untreatable, it can only be relieved.

Certain types of lifestyle and habits of everyday life can cause gastritis, and you may not even be aware of it. First of all, if you consume too much alcohol, you should cut back on it as much as you can. If you are a smoker, you should know that smoking increases risk of developing gastritis. Stress is another major factor, so you should avoid it as much as you can, and practice stress relieving activities such as meditation.

Balanced and healthy diet is the key for preventing many diseases, and the same goes for preventing gastritis. Eating food with plenty of anti-oxidants, such as blueberries, cranberries, grapefruit, tomatoes and bell peppers will help your body maintain strong immune system and avoid infections which can lead to gastritis. Avoiding highly processed food is also recommended, in order to prevent stomach irritation.

Relieving gastritis

In case you suffer from chronic gastritis, it cannot be fully treated in most cases. However, it can be relieved by a combination of medical treatment and proper lifestyle and diet, and you should consult your physician in order to be prescribed a suitable therapy.

In case gastritis is caused by other medical conditions, such as H. pylori, a combination of antibiotics and H. pylori treatment is applied. Antacids are also used, but keep in mind that they only help with heartburn and do not deal with the disease itself.

In order to relieve gastritis-related difficulties, you should modify your diet and lifestyle together with the application of medical treatment. Smoking and alcohol should be avoided, as well as extensive use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. You should modify your diet and eat food rich in anti-oxidants, vitamin B complex, and take food which makes stomach alkaline instead of acidic.
